I used to do primarily multi-track rock band stuff. And although I work at 48 kHz, 24 bit, I know my stuff is listened to 99% on computer speakers and earbuds.īesides the sound processing I need, DP totally kills it for dialog editing. Lucky for me I don't need a compressor with a side chain. I use two instances of the MOTU De-esser - one for esses, the other for low frequency plosives (works great for that!) Otherwise for MOTU I use the MW EQ, Leveler, and Limiter. I also use the Gullfoss EQ because that sumbich just fixes everything. Because I'm lazy in both mic technique and volume editing, I let the Waves Vocal Rider do some work for me.

I don't know if anybody turns my stuff into a podcast, but what I have to do is make my voice as even and pro as possible for presentation. I use DP almost 100% for internet voice-over. I'd give them a barely-passing C- (c minus) the way they are today. Sorry to be blunt, but that's my take on DP's plugins> they compare to other DAWs' and 3rd party's the same way QuickScribe compares to Finale. Since it seems this won't get addressed by MOTU anytime soon, it is at that point, when you need more, that you may wish to start looking elsewhere for really nice and feature-packed plugins. These are some of the things that compel me to almost never use any of DP's dynamics plugins anymore, and mostly ignore all of them (since there are much better equivalents in my arsenal). It sounds choked and ugly with only a couple dB of limiting. The MW Limiter sounds very bad to my ears.

There are also inconsistencies (not subtle) on how DP's plugins sum to mono.Īlso, there's no option to oversample any compressor or limiter or its ancient distortion plugin (I haven't analyzed them yet, but I wouldn't be surprised this makes them quite dirty -in a bad way- and full of aliasing distortion). None of the quantizers dither properly to 24 bits either (including the Freeze and Merge commands). Other otherwise useful plugins are full of old bugs MOTU hasn't bothered to fix, such as Trim. it makes perceived volume-matching with bypass and active impossible, and, to me at least, this is a crucial part of EQing! And the "FFT graphic" on that plugin is just a joke (as in not having it wouldn't make much difference). MW EQ doesn't even have a mere output gain knob (!), for unicorns' sake. There is no side chain and no side chain filters for any of the compressors, not even for the "newer" Dynamic EQ. However, after you get to know them and you advance more in your creative endeavours, you will probably soon discover that they're kind of old, limited and don't really have any "pro" features that almost any other 3rd party plugins have these days (DP supports side chaining, yet they only offer ONE plugin with that feature> MW Gate!)
You will be able to do all the basic stuff you need with them. DP's plugins will serve you perfectly well.
